Who says pumpkins need to be orange…make in any
fabric you love or to go with your home interior!
What you will need:
Scissors
Fabric
Needle
Thread
Stuffing
Twine or wool
Glue gun
½ cinnamon stick.
Reuse and recycle:
For the stuffing we used the contents of an old pillow. Our fabric was a remnant from curtains, but you could also use an old piece of clothing. We used a cinnamon stick for the stalk, but you can also forage for some small sticks.
Top tip: Home interior shops also often have annual remnant sales, and you can often pick up lovely fabrics for next to nothing for all of your crafting projects.
Method:
1. Cut the fabric into a rectangle.
Note: Our fabric measured approx.: 32cm x 18cm. Our finished pumpkin measured approx. 10cm wide and 6cm in height. If you would like your pumpkin smaller or larger, you can adjust the size of your fabric rectangle accordingly.
2. Start with fabric facing pattern side facing up. Take each end and pair together. Sew with needle and thread, using a running stitch from top to bottom.
3. Pull the thread to gather the fabric together and close the gap.
4. Once it is pulled tightly, wrap the thread around the end of gathered fabric a couple of times and secure with a knot. The fabric we used was quite thick, you will be able to pull this tighter with a thinner fabric.
5. Repeat steps 2-4 along one of the open sides of the fabric.
6. Turn the fabric back to the correct way and you will see the beginning of the base of your pumpkin.
7. Fill the pumpkin with stuffing.
8. Sew the open end of your pumpkin with a whip stitch.
9. Take the wool or twine, and wrap around the centre of the pumpkin and tie tightly at the bottom.
10. Repeat 3 more times, until you have 8 segments on the outside of your pumpkin - covering any seams as you go. Pull tightly as you go to create the grooved pumpkin effect, also tying at the base of the pumpkin.
11.Using a glue gun, attach ½ of a cinnamon stick to the centre of your pumpkin.
12. Well done, your pumpkin is now complete!
